Bottles Codes From The Scotch Malt Whisky Society

The Scotch Malt Whisky Society, or SMWS for short, famously don't tell their members the name of the distillery when releasing bottles. Some say the reason behind that choice is to promote unbiased tasting and discovery, others muse it may be to comply with agreements with distilleries - all we know is they have released some absolute crackers over the years.

We've compiled a list of codes to make it easy to find out what whisky is inside each bottle. The first digits relate to the distillery, and the numbers after the dot (.) relate to the number of the release, from that distillery. Sometimes you'll see a letter preceding both -that relates to the type of liquid in the bottle, for example a "G" means it's a Grain whisky.

Gordon & MacPhail

Bottled by Gordon & MacPhail, Elgin for their Connoisseurs Choice range.

One of the great losses of the 1980s closures is Convalmore on the edge of Dufftown, near the famous names of Balvenie and Glenfiddich. For most of its life, starting in 1894, the distillery has been associated with the big names of the blending world. Initially, the Lowries before a certain James Buchanan (of Black & White fame) acquired the business as he expanded his empire.
Today, Convalmore still stands but has been stripped out and is used by William Grant & Sons for warehousing. The name itself is retained by Diageo, who have until recently bottled the distillery as part of its Special Releases. The distillery was expanded a couple of times during its lifespan and famously also ran a column still for a short period in the 1910s. What remains are the whiskies themselves, which showcase a worthwhile single malt with many characteristics shared by the remaining Dufftown distilleries.

Balmenach 1970 Miniature

A distillery that continues to be overlooked to this day. Balmenach was one of the earliest Speyside distilleries, founded in 1824 on a farm by James McGregor. Rumours and family tales of distilling, put this date much earlier as explained by Sir Robert Bruce Lockhart, who had family connections and wrote the book ‘Scotch’ as well as being an inspiration for James Bond.
Today, it remains relatively obscure with the current owners, Inver House, having no plans to establish it as a single malt. Instead, since 2009 the Caorunn gin is produced on the site and the owners arguably see more potential in that aspect. This is a great shame as Balmenach has character thanks to its long fermentation and use of worm tubs. Those who value the whisky the most are blenders who keep the distillery busy filling orders for their blends.

Craigellachie 1971 Miniature 5cl

Craigellachie 1971 Miniature

A miniature bottle of Macduff 1975 vintage, bottled by Gordon & MacPhail part of their Connoisseurs Choice range.

Established in 1960, during another whisky boom, the MacDuff distillery is still trying to create an image for itself. Founded by the MacDuff Distillers Limited, near Banff in Aberdeenshire, the distillery is owned today by the Bacardi group. The boom during the 1960s was strong and particularly around blends, so MacDuff’s production was increased, and to this day, is largely associated with the William Lawson Scotch blend.
Part of the issue for MacDuff is that it has been bottled under a variety of names including the Glen Deveron and currently, The Deveron. This latest incarnation was launched in 2015 as part of the Last Great Malts range and features a variety of age states in an eye-catching smoky glass bottle. These have been well received and are well-priced for their age statements. Perhaps after sixty-plus years, we can now appreciate this overlooked distillery.
