Selling your cask is simple.

Four stages from re-gauge to bank transfer. Most sellers are done with their part of it within a week.

  1. Get a re-gauge report

Order one from the bonded warehouse holding your cask, and we’ll take care of the rest.

  2. We value your cask

Send us the report and any purchase paperwork. A specialist comes back with an honest estimate, with no obligation to sell.

  3. It goes to auction

Your cask runs in front of bidders all over the world, with a reserve set at a price you are comfortable with.

  4. You are paid

We handle the delivery order and the ownership transfer paperwork, then pay you once the transfer is confirmed.

The process in detail

From warehouse to bank transfer.

The overview above covers it in four lines. This is the same process written out properly — what we do at each stage, and how long each part takes.

  1. Get a re-gauge report

A re-gauge report tells us — and every buyer — exactly what is in the cask today: bulk litres, strength, litres of alcohol, and the cask's current condition. It is the single document a cask sale is built on.

Most bonded warehouses can produce one within a few working days for a small fee. If you are not sure who holds your cask, or you have never ordered one before, ask us and we will point you in the right direction.

  2. We value and catalogue your cask

Send us the re-gauge report along with any purchase or transfer documents you hold. We value the cask against recent comparable auction results rather than a published guide price, and agree a reserve with you before it is listed.

There is no obligation to proceed at this stage. Plenty of people ask what a cask is worth and decide to hold on to it.

  3. Auction goes live

Your cask goes in front of bidders all over the world. You can follow the bidding from your account as it happens, and the reserve means it will not sell below the figure you agreed.

All cask sales remain 100% anonymous — buyers see the cask details and condition, not yours.

  4. Payment and ownership transfer

Once the auction closes we handle the delivery order and the transfer paperwork that moves ownership to the buyer while the cask stays in bond. This is the part that puts most people off selling privately, and it is the part we do for you.

You are paid once the transfer is confirmed — typically within 21 working days of the auction ending.

Distillery, cask type and number, the year it was filled, and which warehouse holds it — whatever you know. If you already have a re-gauge report, say so and we will ask for it by email.

How valuations work

How we value your cask.

No two casks are quite alike, and a bottle price list will not tell you what a cask sitting in bond is worth. A valuation weighs what the cask is, what the re-gauge says is left in it, and what comparable casks are actually selling for right now.

There is no fixed price list.
Every cask is assessed against its own re-gauge.

The cask itself

Distillery, cask type and size all shape what a cask is worth. A first-fill sherry butt from a sought-after distillery sits in a very different market to a refill hogshead from a widely available one.

How the cask has been used matters as much as what is in it. First-fill, second-fill and refill casks mature spirit differently, and the wood is part of what a buyer is bidding on.

Condition and re-gauge

The re-gauge report is the single most important document in a cask valuation, and it is checked against what a buyer would expect for a cask of that age and type.

  • Litres of alcoholWhat is actually left in the cask after years of evaporation, and the figure most buyers work back from.
  • Angel’s shareWhether the loss is what would be expected for the cask’s age, its strength and the warehouse it has sat in.
  • Warehouse typeRacked, palletised or dunnage — how a cask has been stored affects how it has matured, and buyers price that in.

The market today

Ultimately, value is set by what buyers are prepared to pay today.

We value against recent comparable cask sales rather than published guide prices. Demand by distillery and age moves faster than any price list can track, and a cask that was slow to sell a year ago can be in strong demand now.

This is why we re-check pricing before every auction.

Questions

Good to know.

  • How do I get a re-gauge report?
Contact the bonded warehouse your cask is stored in — most can arrange one within a few working days for a small fee. If you are not sure who holds your cask, send us whatever paperwork you have and we will help you trace it.
  • What is WOWGR, and do I need to worry about it?
WOWGR is the HMRC registration that governs who may own duty-suspended goods held in bond. It is the part of a cask sale most people find daunting, and it is the part we handle: we complete the ownership transfer paperwork as part of the sale.
  • Can I sell a cask I bought privately?
Yes. Most casks we sell were originally bought privately or through an investment company. We will need your purchase or transfer documents and a current re-gauge report.
  • Is the sale kept anonymous?
Yes — every cask sale is anonymous. Buyers see the cask, its re-gauge and its condition, not your name.
  • What does it cost to sell?
Nothing. There is 0% seller’s commission and no entry fee on a cask, so the full hammer price is yours. Buyers pay a premium on top of their winning bid, which is where our fee comes from.
